There are increasing reports from Ukraine that occupying soldiers are undermining the places they leave in order to cause as much damage as possible after they leave the place. However, it doesn’t always pay off for them, as the case from Mariupol proves.

In the city where some of the fiercest fighting of the war so far took place, according to a report by the Daily Mirror, Ukrainian fighters managed to lure the Russians into a trap. By telephone, the occupiers were alerted to the appearance of members of the Azov Regiment, which had been defending the local Azovstal steelworks for several days.

According to a post by the mayor of Mariupol on Telegram, a Russian unit went to a house on the outskirts of the city to eliminate suspected fighters. Instead, a mine, planted by other Russian soldiers, was waiting for them on the spot.

The Mariupol mayor’s office then released a report saying one of the Russians had been killed. Another lost his leg in the explosion and was taken to a hospital in Donetsk.

The Azov Regiment, also known as the Azov Battalion, is a controversial group of soldiers that was officially incorporated into the National Guard of Ukraine in 2014 after retaking Mariupol from pro-Russian separatists in June of that year.

A number of soldiers have been accused of links to neo-Nazism after being photographed with SS symbols or swastikas. Therefore, it is important for Russian soldiers to kill the members of the regiment, because the propaganda can then talk about the denazification of Ukraine, which Vladimir Putin mentioned at the beginning of the war.
