The incident took place in the center of the city, according to the Ukrainian media, a strong explosion shook the whole of Berdyansk. Black smoke was billowing over the scene, the Unian agency reported, citing witnesses who reported gunfire after the explosion. According to Russian media, it was a terrorist attack.
Ukrainian officials have not yet officially commented on the incident.
The damage is also close to the reactors, the IAEA said. She called for an end to the fighting at the power plant
“The car belonging to the head of the city (Berđansk) was blown up, the car was parked at the city administration. Subsequently, there was a shootout,” Vladimir Rogov, a member of the occupation administration, said earlier, adding that doctors hospitalized Bardin in critical condition.
“Unfortunately, he died in hospital. Such cases (terrorist attacks) are common here,” Rogov said later.
At the beginning of August, as reported by the Russian media, Vitaly Gura, a representative of the Russian-appointed administration, succumbed to injuries during an assassination attempt.
Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24 this year. Its troops control a large part of southern Ukraine’s Kherson and Zaporozhye regions and, according to Kiev, are preparing a referendum on joining Russia. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian army announced a counter-offensive in the Kherson region last week and on Monday called on residents of the occupied territories to prepare for fighting.
