Ten KP Grand Slam quarterfinals. A miraculous resurrection and a real tragedy

Seasons and careers have their divides. Just look at Plíšková. She was unable to catch this year after a broken wrist. She had to miss the Australian Open, and was eliminated in the second round at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Pliskova vs. Sabalenkova

Online report on Wednesday from 18:00

It was only at the popular US Open that she got into her caliber again. And after Monday’s victory over Belorussian Azarenkova in the fourth round, she happily unloaded.

“Of course, the result here will change my view of this year. He’s been disastrous so far. It will be a little less catastrophic now.”

She doesn’t like the saying about disappearing into the realm of oblivion and the abyss of history that befalls all participants except the trophy holder.

“I have won four matches, which I consider a success. And I can still go on.”

She advanced to the top eight for the fiftieth time at one of the four most famous events, which in a way surprised her.

“I don’t care about these statistics. If someone had asked me, I would have guessed that I have been to the quarterfinals more than once.”

“On the other hand, I couldn’t climb the third round for a long time, so it’s not a complete misery.”

And we’re back at that career turning point. After 17 failures, she shined – six years ago precisely at Flushing Meadows.

US Open 2016

Plíšková – Konjuhová 6:2, 6:2

Finally! After missing the Olympics in Rio, she played on American concrete. After a tense tug-of-war with Venus Williams in New York, she unceremoniously saw off the young Croatian as well.

She broke it right at the beginning and reached it with two aces in the end. “Very good performance. The introduction put me at ease. I went for points,” she stated with satisfaction.

SMILE. Karolína Plíšková after winning the US Open quarterfinals.

Konjuhová was grateful that she cleared Polka Radwaňska out of her way, with whom she had a record of 0:6.

She did not stop at her breakthrough even in the semi-finals, where she also defeated Serena Williams. Only in the match for the title did she lose to Germany’s Kerber.

Australian Open 2017

Plíšková – Lučičová 4:6, 6:3, 4:6

A drama with heart-pounding twists and turns in the score. With a score of 4:6, 0:2, the Czech was waiting to see if the battered veteran in Laver Arena would stop hitting the court.

She pulled herself together and led 4-3 in the third set when the Croatian wife of an Italian restaurateur from Florida in Melbourne went backstage for treatment with her calf and thigh bandaged.

Karolína Plíšková is angry with herself in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

After six minutes, she hit serve and won twelve of the next thirteen points. End. Plíšková reproached herself for being too cautious. “I should be able to deal with a player like that,” she said.

Coach Kotyza also gave his stimulating comments: “Reliability and composure are fine. They can save Kaje a few matches, but they won’t win her the Grand Slam. What is important is the courage to lean into the balloon before the opponent.’

Roland Garros 2017

Plíšková – Garcia 7:6, 6:4

It was blowing over the clay of Paris. Plíšková doesn’t like either the slowest surface or the wind. Nevertheless, her surprise march in the city on the Seine continued.

She held on in the tie break, then held her serve like a model, didn’t let the French forehand escape. She turned the ball into an unstoppable return.

Karolína Plíšková rejoices over her victory over Caroline Garcia.

“Courage made the decision,” praised her coach at the time, Kotyza. “The important thing was that Kája found a balance between control and activity.”

Plíšková enjoyed herself: “Before the tournament, I didn’t think I was capable of playing good tennis on clay. Now I’m excited.”

She was stopped only then by the bulletproof Romanian Halep.

US Open 2017

Pliskova – Vandeweghe 6:7, 3:6

The cocky American woman acted like a seasoned gunslinger in a Wild West shootout. Plíšková, at that moment the world number one, was only the second on the court.

“I can play much better than I did, she much worse,” she explained. She missed a promising opportunity after turning from 2:4 to 5:4, when she did not use the set point. “I made a mistake. If I could do this exchange back, I would play it differently. It probably wanted to push harder.”

Plíšková lost in the quarterfinals of the US Open to Coco Vandeweghe

Kotyza was once again sorry that his charge did not commit more: “The precautionary component outweighs the risky component. No one gets to the cup by throwing balls over the net.”

Before long, he was “fired” by Plíšková.

Australian Open 2018

Pliskova – Halepova 3:6, 2:6

And that Simona again. This time on the hot concrete in Laver Arena. Plíšková broke to 3:0 and reached for another break. But then she lost nine games in a row. And it was done.

“She just likes my style. Even in training,” said KP about her fateful sokyna. “She doesn’t develop her own speed, she just uses mine.”

Karolína Plíšková says goodbye to Melbourne after being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

“I try to play fast, which probably suits her. And in the end it’s just me running. Actually, it doesn’t make sense,” pondered Plíšková.

She reached the quarterfinals at the fifth of six Grand Slams. She spoke with determination, “I am gaining experience. Even if it takes another two years, I will find a recipe for Halep as well.”

US Open 2018

Pliskova – S. Williams 4:6, 3:6

On the sold-out Arthur Ashe court, the eighth-seeded Plíšková took the lead 4:2. But then the 36-year-old Williams stopped spoiling like crazy, took eight games in a row and was unstoppable.

At that time, Plíšková bravely hid her sadness from the family tragedy in public. Her father-in-law, a big fan of hers, died during the tournament.

DAMN. Tennis player Karolína Plíšková looks at the unfavorable development of the score in the quarterfinals of the US Open against Serena Williams.

Only at the end of the interview with Czech journalists did she hear condolences and the question: How difficult is it to concentrate on tennis at such times?

“Of course it’s difficult now. Most of all for (husband) Michal. I’m glad he stayed here with me. It was up in the air what to do next. But we fought simply for…”

She didn’t finish the sentence. She burst into tears. She just said, “Don’t be angry.”

Australian Open 2019

Pliskova – S. Williams 6:4, 4:6, 7:5

A much happier story. Plíšková was already losing 1:5 in the third set. Although she faced a total of four match points, she defeated the legend, after which she spoke:

“I was almost in the dressing room, but now I’m standing here. My mind was on the way off the court, only the body remained.’

VICTORY. Karolína Plíšková celebrates the scalp of Serena Williams and her first advance to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

“It was very windy and on one side of the court I had to play against the wind and against Serena, which is quite challenging.”

Williams sprained her ankle when she was just one-fifteenths away from advancing. After the match, however, she refused to complain about the injury: “Karolína simply played like a partes. She hit the lines. She played perhaps her best tennis in her life.”

Plíšková was then narrowly pushed by Japan’s Ósaková.

Wimbledon 2021

Plíšková – Golubicová 6:2, 6:2

She arrived at the All England Club without any lofty goals. Gradually, however, she found her liking in the area surrounded by traditions.

She didn’t mess with the clever Swiss woman at all. At 3:2, she bounced back for the first time, after a while she added a second break and fought for advancement. She added to her respectable collection by participating in the semi-finals at all Grand Slams.

Karolína Plíšková rejoices at the victory in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

“A lot of people said to me: ‘You can do it in Paris and you can’t do it at Wimbledon?'” she said. “I’m happy that it was even for me in all four tournaments.”

“I feel a bit like I’m in a dream. I believed I would find my game. I’m happy that it worked out here.”

She also consulted with the Belarusian Sabalenko. However, the sacred silver plate was blown away by the Australian Bartyová.

US Open 2021

Plíšková – Sakkariová 4:6, 4:6

A completely forgettable match. The seeded four looked more like a tame victim for an irritated sled. She did not earn a single break point.

Sakkari scored a hard-to-believe 22 points in a row while serving. “I didn’t get almost any chance, which annoyed me a little, because it doesn’t happen to me much,” Plíšková pointed out.

Once again she got a lesson in aggression. The hungrier and more aggressive female dominated. The Czech was actually just watching.

“I didn’t have this match in my hands. Actually, she didn’t surprise me because we trained together before the tournament. I know he has form. But I still watched how she went about it.”

US Open 2022

Plíšková – Sabalenková is played on Wednesday from 18:00

A disastrous year can still turn out quite nicely. Plíšková has gained a lot of experience. He feels the form. He believes in himself. She is not a favorite. But she would certainly like to improve her quarterfinal score to 5:5 on Wednesday in New York.
