The Spolu coalition has given up the fight for the Castle

“There will be no own candidate,” one of the leading ODS politicians, who did not wish to be named, told Práv.

“Nobody Wants It”

“Some may still be waiting for the results of the senate elections and hope that Miloš Vystrčil would somehow swing. But what will probably happen is that we tell voters to vote for the Democratic candidates and that will be it,” the source said.

At one time, there were rumors about Senate President Vystrčil that he could be a suitable coalition candidate for the Castle, but he himself always deflected questions about these speculations, saying that he is fully focused on the Senate elections, which will take place on September 23 and 24. Vystrčil defends the mandate in Vysočina.

Even the chairman of the ODS club, Marek Benda, is skeptical that Spolu would field its own candidate. “I’m afraid that now it’s very unlikely,” he told Právu Benda.

“Nobody wants to do that. As we can already see today, the campaign will be unpleasant and the profit will be very small,” he said.

According to him, the coalition negotiated with many personalities. “I myself spoke to at least ten people who, in my opinion, would be quality, representative candidates for president. They all sent me to hell,” added Benda.

Maybe Fischer for ODS

The pre-election campaign for the presidential elections, which will take place on January 13 and 14 next year, will peak in the winter. There is also a fear in the coalition that at the time of the energy crisis, there would be few personalities who would associate their face with the governing parties.

“The negotiations are not over yet, but it may be that we will support one of the current candidates,” ODS vice-chairman and Minister of Transport Martin Kupka told Práv.

Kupka is not afraid of whether support from coalition parties would be the proverbial kiss of death.

“Those parties have their electorate, which can be beneficial for the candidates,” he noted. The ODS has previously expressed skepticism about the support of General Petr Pavel, who started the campaign yesterday and is one of the biggest favourites. Pavlov’s communist past bothers her.

The strongest ruling party did not field its candidate even in the previous presidential election in 2018.

Although former ODS chairman Mirek Topolánek was a candidate, the party for which he was prime minister from 2006 to 2009 did not officially support him. There is now talk in the corridors that the most feasible option for the ODS could be the support of the independent senator Pavel Fischer, but not all party members agree on him.

Even the speaker of the House of Representatives and TOP 09, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, no longer believes that Spolu would pull out a name at the last minute. “We are still discussing it. But it looks more and more like we won’t have our candidate,” admitted Právu.

“At the moment, it is not realistic for us to put together our own candidate for president. It’s not about forcing someone into the presidency, but about restoring dignity to the office,” the chairman of the People’s Club, Marek Výborný, told Práv. According to him, the KDU-ČSL will give the voters a recommendation on which of the candidates to vote for before the first round of the election.

Nerudová leads the pirate forum

Even the coalition Pirates are no longer considering their own candidate. They launched a poll on their national forum on who they should support in the presidential race. So far, Danuše Nerudová, an economist and former rector of Brno’s Mendel University, is leading, with Petr Pavel in second place and Marek Hilšer in third.

“The poll is not binding for us, but the truth is that Mrs. Nerudová speaks a lot about topics that are close to us, for example housing,” Pirates chairman Ivan Bartoš told Práv.

The strongest opposition movement ANO is still waiting to hear how the maneuvering chairman Andrej Babiš will pronounce. He is one of the favourites, but he has to announce the decision on October 28 after delays. SPD MEP Hynek Blaško already announced his candidacy for the Castle in May, but there is talk that Tomio Okamura’s movement will not officially support him.
