Ukrainian photojournalist Andriy Dubčak and his son survived a cluster munition attack. The gun also damaged their car. “At first, the explosions were heard far away from me, but gradually they got closer. After a few seconds, the hell started,” the Ukrainian journalist described in the report. The pair made a video of the banned bomb attack.

Andrij Dubčak and his son Danylo were filming Russian artillery fire on the outskirts of Bakhmut in late July when a cluster bomb hit them. “Honestly, I didn’t understand what it was because it wasn’t a typical sound, like artillery or a grenade. After a while I understood that it was a cluster munition. The explosions were heard far away from me at first, but gradually they got closer. After a few seconds it started hell,” a Ukrainian journalist described in the report.

The photojournalist heard explosions and felt shock waves around him. “You just lie there and think. I wasn’t thinking about my safety, but what my son was doing, where he was and what was with him. It was really crazy. After the wave of explosions, I tried to get up and go to my son, but the cluster munitions it probably also has timers. As soon as I got up, there was another explosion,” added Andrij Dubčak. Fortunately, the photojournalist and his son were not injured in the attack.

Most countries have agreed to ban this type of weapon. However, some countries such as Russia, China and the USA did not sign the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions in 2008. The international organization Human Rights Watch has now found that Russia deploys cluster bombs on a large scale, and Ukraine has used them at least three times since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

A cluster bomb is a type of cluster munition. It consists of a container (cartridge) that contains a certain amount of submunitions, e.g. small bombs. They are gradually released. But many bombs do not detonate on impact and may explode decades later. “It is very easy to use and it is safe for the Russian army. At the same time, it is very effective,” the journalist explained. Cluster bombs are known to kill and maim civilians, especially children.
