In recent months, it seemed that the Turks, as a prominent regional player, are breaking the ice in relations with Israel. Just on January 7, the Jewish state was attacked by gunmen from the radical Palestinian movement Hams. They murdered over 1,000 people and kidnapped another 200. Since then, Israel has been at odds with Hams, and every day it is on its toes in the Gaza Strip, which, according to Palestinian sources, has claimed close to 8,000 civilian casualties.
The Turks express their support for Hamsa, which was confirmed by their president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the weekend. At the time when the Turks were celebrating the centenary of the republic, he declared that Hams was not a terrorist organization. Erdogan supports Hams especially with weapons, according to Tom Lan, a Turkologist and the first ambassador of the Czech Republic to Turkey in 1995 and 1999.
