The European Union continues to provide not only humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. For example, it supports the growth and development of local infrastructure. The challenge for the Union remains that the money does not end up in the hands of terrorists. “It recently appeared in the media that Hamas uses pipes paid for by the European Commission to launch rockets,” says political scientist Tomáš Weiss from the Department of European Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University in an interview for Czech Radio Plus.

“Relatively little money goes into development aid to the Gaza Strip, mostly for the Palestinian government. The union said it would review the transaction, which I see as a political gesture,” believes political scientist Weiss.

“The Israeli ambassador said that the Israelis themselves have no suspicion that European money is being misused in this way and going to Hamas. Over the past 20 years, it was about 40 billion dollars not only from the European Union,” he describes.
“However, it recently appeared in the media that the tubes paid for by the Union are used by Hamas to launch rockets,” claims the expert, but adds that he could not verify the information. Doubts therefore remain, according to him.
A common state?
“The long-term position of the member states is based on events before 1948. In the early 1980s, the European states agreed that they wanted a two-state solution in relation to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Since then, they don’t want to let go of them – they’re afraid that if they open them again, they’ll never close them again,” he says.

“One of the reasons why the attack happened now is Israel’s rapprochement with some Arab states, especially Saudi Arabia. If anything drove the conflict from the very beginning, it was the irreconcilable attitude of a number of Arab states that had nothing to lose,” believes Weiss.
“It can be seen that the states that were affected, such as Egypt or Jordan, made peace with Israel a relatively long time ago, compared to Saudi Arabia, which could not care less. Even these regimes with a generational change are changing their attitude and are interested in the economic future of the region – that’s why they want to normalize relations,” explains the expert.
“Discrediting the radical right approach could open a debate in Israel about whether it can be maintained as it is. Some kind of agreement needs to be reached,” concludes the professor.
