Israel launched a major military operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip after the movement’s gunmen killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, in an attack on Saturday, October 7, in southern Israel. Another 240 or so people were taken as hostages to the Gaza Strip. Some of them died in the strikes, according to Hamas, and several others were released.
Over 150 Palestinians were killed in clashes in the West Bank, according to local authorities.
Because of the civilian casualties, Israel faces calls from the United States, Arab countries and some European countries to be more protective of non-combatants in its military interventions.
But Israel says it is trying to limit civilian casualties as much as possible, for example by calling for people to leave for the southern part of the Gaza Strip. The US and other countries are also calling on Israel for a humanitarian pause in the fighting, which should allow for better protection of civilians and the distribution of more humanitarian aid.
