The visit of Prime Minister Peter Fiala (ODS) and his entourage to Nigeria was cancelled. It was this that caused huge logistical problems for diplomats and the Government Office. The entire delegation will eventually stay in Kenya for a day longer and then move on to Ghana.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Czech delegation headed by the Prime Minister was supposed to fly to Nigeria. However, the trip was canceled approximately 24 hours before it took place.
According to the Czech government, Nigeria has announced that it is unable to provide an adequate reception and program, including a business forum. Some experts on foreign policy are convinced that it can also be related to, for example, the way the Czech Republic supports Israel in the UN.
However, the cancellation of the trip caused considerable problems. “Practically, this means several things. First of all, the flight schedule needs to be adjusted according to how the next program is planned. This means, for example, an extension of the hotel stay, both for the Prime Minister and his delegation, as well as for the press entourage,” he said TV Nova spokesperson of the Office of the Government Václav Smolka.
According to Smolka, it also added work to the embassies. “Here it is the embassy in Kenya and the embassy in Ghana that have to somehow deal with the fact that the length of stay is not as originally planned,” the spokesman concluded.
Fiala is on a week-long visit to sub-Saharan Africa from Friday. He was supposed to have subsequently arrived in Nigeria from Kenya. That’s where the entire government delegation will stay a day longer. However, the program still remains unclear. Everyone should then move to Ghana on Wednesday.
The prime minister was supposed to visit five countries in total: Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast. However, the program published on the government’s website already mentions only four destinations.
Prime Minister Fiala arrived in Kenya on Sunday from Addis Ababa, where he held talks with top officials and opened the Czech-Ethiopian business forum. On Monday, the prime minister opened a business forum in Nairobi and visited the museum there.
On Tuesday, Fiala then met Kenyan President William Ruto at the Presidential Palace in Nairobi. Subsequently, he also held talks with the Kenyan Minister of Defense, Aden Dual.
Canceling business visits for Czech politicians is nothing exceptional. Even Nigeria was not originally in the plans for the African trip. Instead, Fiala was supposed to visit Angola, but she canceled the visit a week before the start of the trip through the countries of sub-Saharan Africa.
