Ukraine liberated a number of villages during this year’s counter-offensive. But she did not conquer Crimea. And the Russian army continues to occupy a number of cities, including Melitopol and Tokmak. What aid to Ukraine will be most effective for the coming winter in this situation? Oana Lungescu was responsible for Czech Radio Plus, who was a NATO spokesperson from 2010 until this year and is now an honorary member of the British think tank Royal United Services Institute.

What aid to Ukraine will be most effective for the coming winter in this situation?
The most effective strategy is its support, both from NATO allies and the wider international community. The statement by the G7 leaders, who confirmed that it will continue, is therefore welcome. NATO’s defense ministers also now discussed with President Volodymyr Zelensky, and they also pledged to further support Ukraine.

Isn’t the attention of NATO members towards Ukraine waning because of the ongoing war in the Middle East?
It is true that we are now facing a number of security problems and crises. But leaders simply don’t have the luxury of being able to choose which problems to solve. He has to deal with all of them at once. The G7 officials said that regardless of the terrible war going on in the Middle East, they will pay the same attention to Ukraine as before. It is not just that we wish Ukraine a victory, but also an investment in our security.

Could the situation in the US Congress, where the Republican majority threatens to block another aid package worth over 60 billion dollars, slow down these investments?
Every support is important. The Biden administration has made an unequivocal commitment to support Ukraine, as it has to aid Israel. But that is not a contradiction. The debate of legislators continues in different countries, opinions differ, and that’s fine, that’s democracy.

The United States is providing unprecedented aid to Ukraine, remaining the country’s largest military aid provider in the world. Together with Ukrainian officials, they are also convening the so-called Rammstein group, where they coordinate the progress with other allies of Ukraine. However, it is important to emphasize that European countries are also increasing their support.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held talks with Vladimir Putin in October, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico confirmed that he wants to stop his country’s military aid to Ukraine. How difficult will it be to reach agreement in NATO in such a situation?
In NATO, the agreement on the continued support of Ukraine and also on its approach to the Alliance is historically the largest. At the summit in Vilnius, all 31 leaders supported this decision.

However, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also met with the Hungarian president this week and spoke with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with a clear message that support for Ukraine must be continued.

Of course, Vladimir Putin is betting that our patience will wear thin over time. But we must not allow him such a victory. It is very important that Putin does not win in Ukraine. When he wins, we don’t know where he will stop. It would have implications for our own security.

Other authoritarian states, such as China, could try something similar, and that would further unravel the world order and the rules on which it rests. Therefore, supporting Ukraine is a key thing for our security.
