A huge gas explosion in the Kenyan capital Nairobi has killed at least three people and injured nearly 300 others. Referring to the statement of the Kenyan government, this is written by the AFP agency. The local Red Cross previously reported almost three hundred wounded.
The explosion occurred at the company’s headquarters in the Embakasi district, according to authorities. The company was engaged in filling pressure cylinders with gas. The explosion occurred around 11:30 p.m. local time, which is about 9:30 p.m. CET.
Residential houses, businesses and cars were damaged. The video shows a huge fire raging near apartment blocks. According to an AFP reporter, numerous firefighting units were still on the scene early this morning. Authorities fear the death toll could rise. Embakasi district police chief Wesley Kimeto said a child was among the victims of the explosion, according to the BBC.
Kenya Red Cross reported on the X Network that 271 people had to be taken to various medical facilities in Nairobi due to the explosion and fire. Another 27 people could be treated on the spot. The Kenyan government later clarified the numbers. It said two people died and 222 people injured in the fire were taken to hospital.
According to local authorities, the explosion occurred on the premises of a company that fills pressure cylinders with gas. “A truck with an unknown registration number that was filled with gas exploded, causing a large fireball,” said government spokesman Isaac Mwaura. The fire also affected the surrounding buildings, where there were shops and mainly apartments.
