British court acquits activist Thunberg of charges | iRADIO

--

A British court on Friday acquitted Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was arrested last year at a London protest against fossil fuels and charged with disturbing public order. According to the judge, there was no charge because the intervention against the protest was unauthorized, Reuters reported.

In October, 21-year-old Thunberg was arrested by the police along with dozens of other participants in a demonstration outside a hotel that was hosting an energy conference with the participation of oil and gas miners.

According to the authorities, the people refused to comply with the conditions of the police, who called on them to move their protest to a designated area.

However, this challenge, which the prosecutor explained in court as the police’s fear of “serious disruption of community life”, was illegal according to Judge John Law. The police could have intervened more gently, and their direction towards the protesters was “so vague as to be illegal,” the AP quoted the judge as saying.

In recent years, Thunberg has participated in demonstrations and climate protests in various countries, and has also spoken at important political conferences. With her weekly protests in front of the Swedish parliament in 2018, she became the face of the global youth movement against climate change.

She appeared in court in London on Thursday with four other defendants aged between 19 and 59. They all pleaded not guilty, and faced a fine if convicted.
