Sixty-one-year-old Antonio D’Acci was an experienced worker in his field. He drove trains across Italy for almost 40 years and unexpectedly became a hero in his last moments, Il Messasggero newspaper wrote.

The tragic ride took place last week on the regional line from Pescara to Sulmona in the central Italian region of Abruzzo. The journey ended abruptly after about twenty kilometers in the open countryside near the village of Brecciarola di Cheti after the driver felt severe chest pains.

Despite the seizure, he managed to bring the Trenitalia train to a safe stop, averting disaster and saving the lives of dozens of people. The driver could not take control of the set, because he did not have access to the driver’s cabin for safety reasons.

Although the paramedics were on the scene very quickly and the cabin crew still tried to provide first aid, the driver died. In an attempt to honor his heroism, the local authorities proposed that a local railway station be named after Antonio D’Acci.

Meanwhile, the incident sparked a debate about the mandatory rest period for train drivers, as well as the “anomaly”, as Il Messaggero wrote, where conductors cannot enter the driver’s cabin from the passenger compartment.
