They blocked traffic. That’s when the police outnumbered them. And then the crowd

--

The climate protection group Letzte Generation blocked the Carolsbrücke bridge in Dresden, Germany, on Friday. According to the police, about 31 activists went to the Carolaplatz square and the Carolsbrücke bridge on Saturday after a previous meeting that took place nearby. There they sat on the road and blocked traffic. A few cyclists joined them shortly afterwards.

Lanes across the bridge in the direction of Neustadt were blocked by people sitting on the bridge. Police asked drivers with knowledge of local conditions to avoid the area, reports a local newspaper Dresden Neuste Nachrichten.

Environmental activists gathered around twelve o’clock in the afternoon, speeches lasted until 1:00 p.m. Activists then blocked the road for almost an hour. It wasn’t until around 2:00 p.m. that the police began to break up the blockade. Traffic was restored shortly after three in the afternoon.

According to reporters on the scene, police initially issued at least three warnings during the crackdown. When the activists did not move from the street despite repeated calls, the police began to take them away. They ordered them to leave and took their personal information.

Preliminary proceedings were initiated against some of the participants due to coercion and violation of the Assembly Act. They were subsequently expelled from the area. A woman aged 34 and two men aged 19 and 23 refused to leave and were temporarily detained by the police. She is now reviewing the costs of the event, which can be charged to 31 people.

According to the police spokesman, 74 police officers were deployed, writes the German daily Die Zeit.

The climate group has previously called for a “disobedient assembly” under the slogan “Democracy needs honesty”.

“Disobedient gatherings” are part of the new strategy of the Last Generation. According to the climate group, these are peaceful street blockades with the participation of many people.

“Just yesterday the Government watered down the Climate Protection Act to cover up its failure. We are tired of listening to the same fairy tales over and over again. We remain disobedient. You too?” Last Generation posted on their X social media account.

The group boasted both photos of the rally and sitting on the road or even having one of its members taken away by the police.

According to the information published on the official website of Last Generation, the next gathering is to be held on May 4 in Munich, and the next one on May 18 in Stuttgart and Leipzig.

“You can join us, whether on the sidewalk or in the street – together we will fight for justice. Many of us will also stay on the street if the police ask us to leave. The police will then probably take these people away. You decide how far you want to go – and we are here for you!” he informs The last generation any other people interested in participating in the meetings.

“Nice weather, the glue season can begin,” user X Thomas commented on the event in Dresden, referring to the numerous events where supporters of the movement to fight climate change even glued themselves to the roads with instant glue.

“I thought you didn’t want to block the roads anymore?” Christian Schmidt asked confused. However, he was probably mistaken. At the beginning of January 2024, the group announced that it would no longer stick to the roads. The group’s members then distributed the second-hand glue that was left to passers-by.

Another X-user, Matthias Knorr, expressed his hope that the Last Generation would return to instant glue again. “I hope you’ll start sticking together again… Then you can finally be classified as a ‘criminal organization,'” Knorr hoped.

User X Thomas Waechter sent strong words to the last generation: “We are tired of putting up with the same offenses from you criminals! We still hate you!”

“Cough for the climate!” Michael Österle also joined in.

Another user then shared the graphic for fun under the Last Generation post. There are three monkeys sitting in a row and next to them an activist from the last generation.

The first of the monkeys covering their mouths “does not speak”. The second monkey, covering his eyes, “does not see.” The third monkey with his fingers in his ears “doesn’t hear” and the glued climate activist next to them “doesn’t think”.
