The trial of people who helped the terrorist in Nice began in Paris

The main perpetrator died in the attack itself. People who were close to him or helped him are on trial. At the beginning of the hearing, Judge Laurent Raviot invited the accused to introduce themselves. Three of them requested interpreters in Arabic and Albanian, the BFM TV server reported.

All declined to be identified.

The courtroom is sparsely filled, according to a news reporter. Most of the victims and witnesses live in Nice, where the attack took place, and did not travel to the 700 kilometers away metropolis. The proceedings are being broadcast live in the congress hall in Nice.

The process is expected to take approximately 3.5 months. The first five weeks will belong to the testimonies of the survivors and relatives of the victims.

On the evening of July 14, 2016, Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel drove a nineteen-tonne truck onto the promenade in Nice into the pedestrian zone. At that time, there were about 30,000 people who came to watch the fireworks at the end of the Bastille National Day celebrations. In total, he hit over 400 people and drove about two kilometers before the police shot him dead.
