The UN Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine stated that war crimes were committed in Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Children were also raped, tortured and illegally detained. The commission will also look into allegations of forced transports and adoptions of children. During the oral presentation of the first conclusions of the commission, its chairman Erik Möse informed about this on Friday.

“Based on the evidence gathered, the commission has concluded that war crimes have been committed in Ukraine,” Möse told the UN Human Rights Council at the first assessment of the bombing of civilian areas, murder, torture, ill-treatment and sexual violence following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

The Norwegian, who previously chaired the UN tribunal for war crimes committed in Rwanda, also spoke of cases in which children were “raped, tortured and illegally detained” in Ukraine. Möse emphasized that the commission is independent and impartial in its work. He also cited two cases of mistreatment of Russian soldiers.

Russia did not participate in today’s meeting of the UN Human Rights Council. He refuses to cooperate with the commission of inquiry, which was established in March.

Today’s preliminary oral report was based on investigations in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Sumy, where commission representatives visited a total of 27 locations and spoke to more than 150 victims and witnesses.
