In the Czech Republic, a truly significant change came into effect in March 2024. For the first time in history, part of the pensioners had access to their pensions. And in such a way that they decreased instead of increasing by default. It can be a rather unpleasant precedent, which will then be used on other groups than the one affected right now.
Unpleasant differences
The truth is that in this case, one great injustice is being solved, with which nothing has been done for the entire thirty years since the change of regime in the Czech Republic. It is really strange, but the former chieftains were left with all their benefits to which they were entitled, including really high pensions.
They came to these by holding high prominent positions. They did not get into them because they were particularly capable, but simply because they were loyal to the regime of the time, which of course also meant that they participated in the oppression of others. This led to great paradoxes, where less capable people took high salaries, which then resulted in high pensions, while those who did not want to submit had to perform low-skilled occupations and, as a result, now receive small pensions.
The state has now decided to partially resolve this contradiction, as a result of which the pensions of former celebrities will decrease. It is estimated to be several thousand people, but the question is whether some of them will defend themselves and how the whole thing will turn out in the end. Apparently, the reduced pensions have already started to work for them. “It is not possible for prominent people of that time to benefit financially even years later from the fact that they supported the totalitarian regime before November,” was evaluated by the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs.
How much did they take?
You are probably wondering how these pensions will be reduced. It is really easy. The pension will be reduced by CZK 300 for each year in a senior position. If someone worked in this apparatus for, say, 20 years, then they will lose the entire 6,000 CZK, which can be really unpleasant.

But make no mistake. These people often had really high pensions, exceeding 50,000 crowns. According to some opinions, a more drastic cut should have come, which would have been more noticeable for them.
