The first measure is the introduction of the obligation of entrepreneurs in the field of arms and ammunition to immediately report suspicious transactions to the police. In practice, this is a so-called red tile in the central register of weapons, which allows sellers to report suspicious purchases.

The second innovation is the expansion of the police’s ability to secure weapons even in cases where they obtain information about their holder justifying the suspicion that such a person may pose a serious danger to internal order or security. If the police receives information from a public authority that a person could pose a risk to internal security, they will be able to take away a weapon not only for health reasons, but also for example because of threats on social networks.

“The new law on weapons will bring fundamental changes for the better, but due to the interconnectedness of IT systems, it may only apply from 2026. Some measures that will contribute to reducing the likelihood of a similar tragic event like the one at the Faculty of Arts of the UK, but may apply almost immediately. If we can arrange, there is nothing to wait for. In addition, we will further discuss possible further changes in the working group, which includes representatives of all parliamentary clubs,” said Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan (STAN).

The Ministry proposed to the House of Representatives to approve the proposal in the first reading, so that the amendment would take effect as soon as possible, ideally from July 1. Both provisions are directly taken from the already approved new law on weapons and ammunition, and the only change is that these fundamental measures will apply earlier.

The attack in the FF UK building on náměstí Jan Palach took place on Thursday, December 21. 14 people did not survive it, among the victims were students and teachers. The perpetrator had previously murdered his father in a house in Hostoun in Kladensko. Subsequently, it turned out that he was also responsible for the double murder of a man and a child in Klánovické les, which happened less than a week earlier.
