Apple has a secret lab in Europe. One AI expert after another is being dragged here from Google – SMARTmania.cz

--

  • Apple is said to have a secret laboratory in Europe for the development of artificial intelligence
  • In recent years, he was also supposed to drag dozens of high-ranking AI experts from Google into it
  • Apparently, Apple does not want to underestimate anything and wants to help out with reliable AI

Apple is said to have established a secret artificial intelligence research center called Vision Lab in Zurich, where it develops cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies. The center should work on products based on generative artificial intelligence, which could compete with the main juices of Apple, i.e. Google and Microsoft.

According to sources from the Financial Times, the technology giant from Cupertino is actively recruiting top experts in artificial intelligence and is said to be fishing mostly in the waters of Google, from where it should have managed to drag a number of experts.

Aggressive recruitment is said to be paying off – since 2018, Apple has managed to attract at least 36 AI experts from Google, including high-profile figures. These include, for example, John Giannandrea, the former head of Google Brain, and Samy Bengio, a leading scientist in the field of AI.

Do not underestimate the preparations

The new secret lab is said to be located in two separate locations in Zurich, where Apple is expanding its generative AI team. In addition, Zurich is not the only place where Apple has its AI experts, after all, it is almost every moment that we learn about an acquisition of a startup focused on artificial intelligence, which will eventually end up under Apple’s wings.

In total, Apple has already bought around twenty AI startups and is not underestimating its preparations. Although it still doesn’t have its own AI chatbot, and purely by eye, it lags behind Google, OpenAI or Microsoft, at least from the user’s point of view, but that will probably change this year.

The main thing is not to spoil the beginning

A prudent pace may pay off for Apple, as it is rumored that its upcoming AI should focus mainly on quality and the legal side of things, which certainly cannot be said about some other chatbots. Hallucinations are common, Bing AI was initially as impressive as it was laughable, and recently Google had its own case of generating images of black Nazis. And it can be assumed that Apple wants to avoid such a faux pas at all costs, not to mention a number of significant lawsuits that OpenAI and others have to deal with somehow.

Don’t overlook

Apple’s AI is perhaps the only one that has been trained legally and ethically

Apple is thus clearly trying not to spoil the beginning and enter the stormy waters of generative AI confidently and in a way that is consistent with the long-term approach of the company. That is, not to be the first at all costs, but to be reliable, high-quality and respectful of privacy more than any other competitor. We’ll see how Apple succeeds this year.
