Fixing Gaza could take up to next century, UN says | iRADIO

--

The total cost of restoring the Gaza Strip, devastated by the nearly seven-month-long war between Israel and the terrorist movement Hamas, will reach 30 to 40 billion dollars (702 to 936 billion crowns) due to the unprecedented scale of the destruction. At the same time, the reconstruction of the destroyed buildings may stretch into the next century, if it proceeds at a similar pace as in past conflicts. According to news agencies, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) stated this.

“UNDP estimates for all reconstruction in the Gaza Strip exceed $30 billion and may reach up to $40 billion,” Abdullah Dardari, UNDP’s head of the Arab States region, told a news conference in Amman. “The scale of the destruction is enormous and unprecedented. It is a task that the international community has not faced since the Second World War,” added Dardári, quoted by the AFP agency.

In a published report, the UNDP also estimated that Gaza would need “approximately 80 years to rebuild all completely destroyed dwellings”. At best, if construction materials were supplied five times faster than during the last crisis in 2021, this could be achieved as early as 2040, the report said.

Figures from the Palestinian Authority show that 80,000 homes were destroyed in the Gaza Strip during the conflict, which was unleashed by Hamas with its terrorist attack against Israel.

The UNDP assessment also includes a number of forecasts of the socio-economic impacts of the war based on the duration of the conflict and predicts decades of suffering. “The unprecedented loss of human life, destruction of capital and sharp increase in poverty in such a short period of time will trigger a serious development crisis that will threaten the future of generations to come,” UNDP said in a statement.

Under the scenario that the war lasts nine months, the proportion of Gazans living below the poverty line will increase from 38.8 percent to 60.7 percent by the end of 2023, according to the UNDP forecast, the report also states.

The war in Gaza began with an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, when militants of this group and its allies killed 1,200 people on the Israeli border and abducted another 253 to the Palestinian territories. In the only ceasefire so far, at the end of November, more than a hundred hostages were released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

The massive Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip and the subsequent ground operation have since claimed the lives of nearly 34,600 Palestinians, in addition to material damage. However, figures from Hamas-controlled authorities cannot be independently verified under wartime conditions and do not distinguish between civilians killed and Hamas fighters.
