Russian invasion forces have made significant progress in a narrow corridor in eastern Ukraine. It was written by the British newspaper The Guardian on Wednesday, according to which the Russians advanced approximately five kilometers northwest of Avdijivka in ten days and allegedly entered the village of Ocheretyne on Sunday. The American Institute for the Study of War also reported that the Russians had recently made confirmed gains in this village in the Donetsk region.

Ocheretyne, once home to around 3,000 people, is located a few kilometers northwest of Avdijivka, which Russian invasion forces captured after heavy fighting in February this year. They subsequently occupied several nearby villages.

Ukraine, which has been facing large-scale Russian military aggression for more than two years, has recently reported a shortage of ammunition. The situation on the battlefield could be improved in the coming weeks by the delivery of new US military aid, the funding of which was approved by the Senate on Wednesday night and is planned to be signed by President Joe Biden during the day.

“Geolocated footage released on April 22 shows Russian forces raising the Russian flag over the military-civilian administration building in the center of Ocheretyne. It indicates that Russian forces occupied the railway station, crossed the railway line and advanced north into the central part of the village,” the US Institute for the Study of War said.

At the same time, the institute noted that it has not yet recorded visual confirmation of Russian control over this municipality. On https://twitter.com/MilitarySummary/status/1782670408107356177 with the raising of the Russian flag published by Russian military bloggers, The Guardian also refers.

Line of defense

According to the paper, the capture of Ocheretyne means that Russia has managed to bypass the northern flank of the recently built Ukrainian front line, including minefields and trenches. Ukraine’s army is trying to establish a defensive line along the Durna River, but reinforced Russian troops have been advancing in recent weeks, using aerial glide bombs to blast Ukrainian bunkers, the newspaper said.

According to The Guardian, the regional command of the Ukrainian army admitted that the situation is difficult. It said the Russians were using “a full arsenal of weapons” against Ukrainian troops, including what it described as chemical weapons. They seized some buildings and occupied the southern part of Ocheretyne, it said, adding that most of the village remains in Ukrainian hands and the situation is said to be under control.

CNN, which also mentions the Russian advance near Ocheretyne, referring to Ukraine’s DeepState monitoring project, says on its website that while the village itself has no strategic value, it is located on high ground, which makes it a desirable military target.

One of the Ukrainian officers told the station that if the Russians were to seize Ocheretyne and hold it, important Ukrainian logistics routes linking three key military hubs – Kostiantynivka, Pokrovsk and Velyka Novosilka – could come under Russian fire.
