Canadian police have announced that they have arrested and charged three Indian nationals who have been living in the province of Alberta for the past few years in connection with the violent death of a Sikh leader last year.

The CBC server wrote that Kamalpreet Singh, Karanpreet Singh and Karan Brar were tracked down by investigators a few months ago and have been closely watched ever since. On Friday, police arrested them in an operation in several provinces.

The shooting of 45-year-old Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar took place last June in front of a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia.

The crime in the fall led to a diplomatic rift between Canada and India. This after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke of “credible intelligence” that Indian intelligence agents may have been involved in the death.

This was followed by the expulsion of a top Indian diplomat, said to be the head of one of India’s main intelligence agencies in Canada.

India has denied any allegations. “Such baseless allegations seek to divert attention from terrorists and extremists who have been given sanctuary in Canada and who continue to threaten India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. And one of Ottawa’s diplomats had to leave the country reciprocally.

Behind the remark about Canada’s sanctuary for extremists is the fact that India has labeled Nijjar as a terrorist. He was a supporter of an independent Sikh state.

According to the BBC, the police said that they were checking the arrested for possible links to the Indian government. She did not provide details.
