Despite the sanctions, Russia buys parts for airplanes from 22 countries

--

According to a survey by the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission (NAKO), most of the components of the Russian MiG-31I, Su-27SM3, Su-30SM, Su-34, Su-35S and Su-57 aircraft are still of Western origin, reports Ukrainska pravda. NAKO came to this conclusion by analyzing almost two thousand different components.

The analyzed components are produced by 244 companies from 22 different countries. 64% of imported components then originate from the USA, with other prominent producing countries including Japan, Switzerland, Germany, France, Great Britain, Taiwan and the Netherlands. Paradoxically, Russia bought few parts from China, only thirteen out of almost two thousand.

As for specific companies, the companies Texas Instruments, Murata Manufacturing, Analogue Devices, Kemet, Micron, Maxim, IDT, AVX, Holt Integrated Circuits, Linear Technology, CIC and ON Semiconductor produce the most components used by Russians.

Last year, Russia bought parts worth 926.6 million dollars (22.4 billion crowns) from these companies, which is a 19.7% drop compared to 2022, but an increase of 69.69% compared to 2021. In addition, in 2023, compared to the previous year, Russia bought fewer components from only two companies, Micron and IDT, while their share was largely replaced by the Japanese company Murata, which claims to monitor its exports.

Russia buys foreign components through a network of intermediaries. This includes companies in Hungary, Cyprus, Turkey and China. It also includes Russians not affected by sanctions. Not only the Russian army buys through this network, but also at least 58 of the largest Russian companies, according to a survey by Schema, an investigative project of Radio Free Europe.

Aviation expert Bohdan Dolintse of the Schemy project said that although Russia uses this network of intermediaries, it could start to face shortages of Western components as early as this year. It will probably be forced to look for new ways to obtain them, because according to the rules of aircraft construction, existing models cannot be built using Chinese or Russian components.
