Russia reports shooting down four ATACMS missiles over Crimea

--

According to Reuters, Ukraine has not yet commented on the alleged attempt to disrupt the air defense over Crimea with ATACMS missiles, and the Russian ministry has not provided any details of the attack. These missiles with a range of up to 300 km were used by the Ukrainians for the first time on April 17 to attack the Dzhankoy military airport in Crimea.

An anonymous US representative subsequently confirmed that Washington secretly sent them to Ukraine before the military aid package was approved in Congress. At the same time, the Pentagon was initially against their delivery due to concerns that their absence in the US arsenal could affect the country’s combat capabilities and that Ukraine could use them to attack Russian territory, thereby bringing the US into direct confrontation with Russia.

Ukraine still uses foreign missiles mainly to attack targets on its own internationally recognized territory, especially occupied Crimea, which serves as a base for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

British Foreign Minister David Cameron’s visit to Kyiv on Friday indicated that this procedure could change in the near future. He indirectly stated that London has no objection to the use of weapons supplied by it to attack targets inside Russia.

So the announcement of the downing of missiles over Crimea is probably not intended to sow distrust in the US about how Ukraine handles its weapons. It is more likely that it is meant to be a show of force after messages from the guerrilla group Ateš were received on Telegram, according to which the Russians are hiding their military equipment in occupied Mariupol, fearing an ATACMS missile attack.
