The slowly approaching electric era will rid us of both the negative and positive effects of combustion engines. Emissions will decrease in the streets and we will breathe better, but we will lose the sound and emotions that are usually associated mainly with gasoline. The previously proclaimed year 2035, when the sale of cars with a traditional drive should not be profitable due to fines, is already practically impossible to achieve.

The share of electric cars in new car registrations in Europe is not growing as fast as expected. It is stagnating somewhere, in Germany even in March registrations fell by almost 29 percent year-on-year. This trend gives hope that internal combustion engines will be around for much longer.

This is particularly pleasing in the case of high-performance super sports, which we cannot even imagine without the smell of gasoline. Europe is also a promising continent for this segment. This is where the best cars with the best engines in the world are made. And where specifically?

Koenigsegg – Ängelholm (Sweden)

In the south of Sweden, not far from the border with Denmark, in Ängelholm, which has a population of around 45,000, the super sports manufacturer Koenigsegg is based, behind which is the founder Christian von Koenigsegg. The automaker managed to create one of the most respected global players and one of the few brands that can compete with Bugatti in terms of driving performance and luxury.

The Koenigsegg factory has an area of 30,000 m2 and in addition to the cars themselves, it also produces an eight-cylinder engine with a volume of 5.1 liters, which produces 1,600 and 1,500 horsepower in the Jesko and Gemera HV8 models, respectively. Together with the electric motor, the system output can reach up to 2300 horsepower.

Bugatti – Salzgitter (Germany)

The founder Ettore Bugatti was Italian, but the car company itself is French. And since 1998 it belongs to the German concern Volkswagen. Therefore, it is not surprising that the unique sixteen-cylinder engine with a volume of 8.0 liters with four turbochargers with an output of up to 1,600 horsepower is not produced in Molsheim, France, but in Salzgitter (about 104 thousand inhabitants), which is located southwest of Wolfsburg.

Local production is characterized by a large proportion of manual work. The 16-cylinder unit consists of 3,712 parts, while a pair of specialists takes care of their exact composition, each of which takes about six weeks.

Zenvo – Præstø (Denmark)

Denmark is known primarily as the home of the Lego company, connoisseurs will associate this lovely country with the small-batch manufacturer Zenvo. In the town of Præstø, with less than 3,900 inhabitants, they are building a spectacular eight-cylinder engine with a volume of 5.8 liters, which can produce 1,119 horsepower in the TS1 model, and even 1,379 horsepower in the case of the Zenva TSR-GT.

The unit is not entirely of its own construction, as it is based on an eight-cylinder engine from Chevrolet. In Zenvu, however, they significantly modified the unit. In addition, the local engineers are preparing their own 12-cylinder fork, which they are developing together with British specialists from Mahle Powertrain, which will work together with two electric motors. Thanks to this, the system power reaches 1265 to 1876 hp.

Aston Martin and GMA – Northampton (UK)

Northampton, with a population of almost a quarter of a million, is known, among other things, for its rotunda from 1100, which is the oldest such structure in England. It is also home to Cosworth, a traditional name in the automotive industry. At the moment, top twelve-cylinder engines with a volume of 6.5 liters are produced here for the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which, despite the atmospheric filling, has a power of 1015 horses. Thanks to the KERS system with an electric motor with 163 horses, the total power of the drive system reaches 1176 horses.

In addition to Aston Martin, Cosworth also supplies GMA, or Gordon Murray Automotive, whose T.50 model is powered by an atmospheric twelve-cylinder 3.9 (663 hp).

Pagani, Aston Martin, Mercedes-AMG – Affalterbach (Germany)

Just as cosmopolitan as Bugatti is Pagani, which was founded in Italy by Argentinian Horacio Pagani. His brand has been associated with Mercedes since the beginning in the 1990s, which supplies twelve-cylinder engines to Pagani.

They are currently being built in Affalterbach, a town of 4,500 that is the home of Mercedes-AMG. In the Utopia model, the six-liter twin-turbocharged M158 engine boasts 864 horsepower.

New Pagani officially: A real utopia with a V12 and a manual!

Thanks to the property tie-up between Mercedes and Aston Martin at AMG, 4.0-liter eight-cylinders also appear in British cars. In the case of the plug-in hybrid supercar Aston Martin Valhala, this unit (M178) together with the electric motor gives 1012 horsepower. In Mercedes-AMG, the four-liter eight-cylinder (M177) can boast a power of up to 639 horsepower.

Lamborghini – Sant’Agata Bolognese (Italy)

Another of the small towns (population 7363) is home to Italy’s second most famous super sports manufacturer. Except for the eight-cylinder 4.0 TFSI from Audi, which Lamborghini assembles in the Urus SUV, the power units are produced in Sant’Agata Bolognese.

They are currently assembling the atmospheric twelve-cylinder 6.5 here, which in the new Revuelto model has up to 825 horsepower. Together with the integrated electric motor of the plug-in hybrid, the entire system produces 1015 horsepower.

Ferrari – Maranello (Italy)

The best for the end? In this case, maybe yes. Together with neighboring Modena, Maranello is home to one of the most famous brands ever. Ferrari boasts that it manufactures all its engines (V6, V8 and V12) in-house. Maranello again falls into the category of smaller cities (about 17,000 inhabitants), while the entire area around the mentioned Modena is literally the heart of super sports production.

Sant’Agata Bolognese (Lamborghini) and the village of San Cesario sul Panaro, home of the Pagani car manufacturer, are also located just a few kilometers away, next to Maranello.

Ferrari SF90 Stradale: The eight-cylinder plug-in hybrid has 1,000 horsepower

Ferrari’s most powerful engine is currently a twin-turbocharged 4.0 eight-cylinder engine with an output of 780 horsepower, which works together with a trio of electric cars in the SF90 Stradale model. In total, the system has a power of 1000 horses.

Also worth mentioning is the 6.5-liter naturally aspirated twelve-cylinder engine with 725 horsepower that powers the Purosangue model, the first SUV in the history of Ferrari.
