Cadillac, the luxury brand of General Motors, is another car company that is abandoning its plan to phase out internal combustion engines within a few years.

American automaker Cadillac has previously set a course for electric cars to make up 100% of its sales by 2030. But that was at a time when everyone believed in steady, or perhaps even accelerating, growth in demand for electric cars, because that’s what the available data looked like. In recent months, however, the rate of growth has been slowing down, so even some automakers are choosing a more cautious approach.

Cadillac is the latest to join them, according to John Roth, vice president of the brand. “One thing I’ve learned in my more than thirty years of experience in the automotive world is that this industry is not a straight line and there are no certainties,” he told reporters.

According to him, the brand responds to customer feedback. He wants to offer them “the luxury of choice”. At the same time, however, Roth assured the world that the plan is to have a complete portfolio of electric cars by 2030. It’s just that the combustion ones probably won’t be off the menu at that time.

“Our path to electric vehicles will not be a straight line. We understand that the market will change over the next six years and we will respond as necessary. As a result, the customer will be our guide and the determining force that decides the transition.

Our data says that 60% of luxury car buyers will consider an electric car as their next car, so our plans to design, develop and bring electric cars to market will not waver. When customers are ready to buy an electric car, we will have the right vehicle for them.” the automaker said later in a statement.

Cadillac isn’t the first brand to moderate its plans for electromobility. The Stellantis concern has stated in the past that it is open to variants of electric cars with internal combustion engines, if there is a demand for them. After all, even the STLA family of platforms presented itself as purely electric, but in reality, electric cars and cars with internal combustion engines are coming on these technical bases.

The Cadillac brand now offers only one electric car – the Lyriq model with a base price of $58,590 (1.36 million crowns). The Escalade IQ SUV should be available sometime this year; its basic price is estimated at around 130 thousand dollars (3 million crowns).
