A car for life? Mercedes claims that 80% of the G-Class offroaders are still on the market

--

The iconic square off-road Mercedes-Benz G-Class was introduced back in 1979 and quickly built a reputation as a reliable, and above all, capable off-road vehicle that is not afraid of any challenge. Over the years, it has also received due attention from the brand, thanks to which it offers impressive luxury, a lot of performance and, now, a purely electric version.

And while answering questions about the purely electric G-Class model, Michael Schiebe, director of the AMG division as well as the divisions responsible for G-Class and Maybach cars, mentioned that the automaker expects the electric G-Class to have a lifespan comparable to models equipped with internal combustion engines. And she is very impressive.

“There are still 80 percent of all manufactured G-class cars on the market,” the Motor1 website quotes a representative of the brand as saying at a round table with journalists. “These cars have a very long life,” added Schiebe.

At the same time, the Mercedes-Benz car company celebrated the production of half a million G-class cars only in 2023. Apparently, the world is still cruising around 400,000 of these machines.

It will be interesting to see how popular the all-electric Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ technology (as the official name sounds) will become among customers who have opted for V8 engines in the past, for example. However, Schiebe added that the brand will continue to focus on the demands of customers, which it will try to adapt to.

“We want to deliver what customers want. And if they want V8s, then our job is to deliver very economical and very powerful V8s,” added Schiebe. At the same time, he believes that the purely electric G-Class can also appeal to completely new customers.
