In terms of crime, the Czech Republic is generally the best in Europe and the world. According to the World Population Review, we are the 8th safest country in Europe, the first is Iceland. But what about cybercrime? Hackers choose the Czech Republic more and more often, warns Check Point Research.

Czech Republic under fire from hackers

It is said to be felt most especially in the business sphere. Cyber security company Check Point Software Technologies has seen a significant increase in cyber attacks.

“Every company in the world faced an average of 1,308 cyberattacks per week, an increase of 28% from the last quarter of 2023. This is a 5% increase year-on-year. However, each Czech company was exposed to an average of 1,571 cyberattacks per week during the same period, while neighboring countries show a much lower rate of attacks.” points out Peter Kovalčík, regional director for Eastern Europe.

At the same time, for example, in the surrounding countries, cyber security is on better numbers. For example, in Poland each company faced an average of 1,010 cyber attacks per week, in Germany an average of 795 cyber attacks per week per organization, in France it is 636, in Switzerland 600, in Austria 965.

By far the biggest onslaught is directed at educational and research organizations, with each company having to cope with an average of 2,454 attacks per week. This is followed by the government and military sectors (1,692 attacks per week per company) and healthcare (1,605 attacks per week per organization). Considering that these are key sectors for the functioning of society, these are alarming numbers.

They attack companies and ordinary citizens

And even ordinary mortals do not avoid attacks. Just look at how often technology websites and the Police of the Czech Republic inform about fraud, phishing campaigns, vishing and other threats that experts across the country deal with every day.

While hackers most often send ransomware attacks to companies – thieving viruses that steal your data and offer to return it after paying a ransom – phishing attacks have mainly “proven” for ordinary people. In these, fraudsters pretend to be someone else, most often Czech stores, logistics companies, but also banks or even the police.
