Opening hours of shops on New Year’s Eve and New Year. When and where to buy? OVERVIEW

The last day of 2022 awaits us and we will soon step into the new one. Although New Year’s Eve is carried in the spirit of exuberant celebrations, it is an ordinary day. Even so, many stores plan to close their stores early. Then we won’t buy at all on New Year’s.

Many Czechs often leave shopping to the last minute. It is therefore not surprising that many of them go to the shops for fresh food or some pyrotechnics only on Saturday. Although the last day of the year is marked by exuberant celebrations and merriment, it is an ordinary day. So the shops are open and we can go and get supplies.

However, most vendors decided to adjust their opening hours and close earlier. So before you go shopping on December 31st, it’s better to check if the store is still open at all.

However, we will not buy a day later. On January 1, we not only celebrate the New Year, but also commemorate the Day of the Restoration of the Independent Czech State. It is a national holiday, when shops must be closed by law.

Since 2016, the law has been in force in the Czech Republic in retail and wholesale stores. It stipulates that shops over 200 square meters must close on selected holidays. The Czech Trade Inspection (ČOI) then supervises whether they comply with the law.

Exceptions are made for smaller shops and gas stations, which are not covered by the ban. However, retail chains have already announced that, despite this, they will not open on New Year’s Day. These are, for example, supermarkets at the main railway station in Prague or Brno, a store in the Mercury shopping center in České Budějovice, on the roof of which is a bus station, or stores at the airport.
