Until the bitter end. I’m dying, the former elite goalkeeper confided

Georg Koch connected his career mainly with Fortuna Düsseldorf, whose colors he defended between 1992 and 1997, later guarding the goal of Biefeld, Kaiserslautern, Chotěbuz and Duisburg. He then achieved success abroad in the colors of Eindhoven, Rapid Vienna and Dinamo Zagreb, ending his career in the lower German league in Herford in 2009, where he later served as sports director.

Now, however, the goalkeeper with 213 matches in the highest German competition is facing a much stronger opponent – pancreatic cancer. “A year ago, the doctor told me that I only had a few months to live, I was dying,” the German goalkeeper confided to the media.

“It all started when I wasn’t feeling well and I got very bad blood test results. Then the doctors diagnosed me with cancer. I don’t know how much longer I will live,” Koch confided.

And he continues in his sad story: “When I comb my hair, I usually end up with whole bunches of hair in my hands. What I used to do in five seconds, I now struggle with half a minute. But I’m not going to give up, that’s not my style.”

And he fights with a cruel disease with the help of dark humor. The members of the band Die Toten Hosen, who are big fans of Fortuna Düsseldorf, presented the club legend with a T-shirt with the inscription “Until the bitter end”.

“I like this style of humor. Looking at that T-shirt makes me happy that I’m still alive, and on the contrary, it gives me motivation and strength. I am grateful to the band,” concludes Koch.
