On Tuesday morning, the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office had the Brussels offices of the German Alternative for Germany (AfD) MEP Maximilian Krah searched. The embassy said in a statement that the European Parliament had agreed to the action and that the move was related to the suspicion of a long-time Krah associate of espionage for China.

Krah, who leads the AfD party candidate for the June European elections, on the X network https://twitter.com/KrahMax/status/1787769064267341955 that the search of the offices was to be expected and that he was not involved in the search. “The European Parliament agreed to enter these premises. Jian G.’s apartment in Brussels was already searched on April 24, 2024,” the representative office announced.

The case concerns German citizen Jian Guo, who is of Chinese origin and is still listed as an accredited assistant on the European Parliament’s website. According to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, Guo is suspected of passing information to Beijing about the proceedings of the European Parliament and the activities of the Chinese opposition as a collaborator of the Chinese secret service.

Krah distanced himself from his assistant and announced two weeks ago that he was firing him immediately. Krah himself claims that he did not know about the actions of the assistant. The AfD leadership supported Krah, so the MEP continues to lead the candidate.

“Today, the office of my former colleague was searched in Brussels. This was to be expected after his arrest, and therefore it is definitely not surprising. But it is remarkable that it took so long,” said Krah. He noted that neither he nor other co-workers were affected by the inspection.

Last week on Friday, Krah wrote to X that by asking the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, his attorney verified that there is no investigation in this case against Krah.

According to the newspaper Die Welt, the High Prosecutor’s Office in Dresden has opened two so-called preliminary investigation proceedings in connection with Krah, which concern possible payments from Russia and China. The preliminary investigation procedure does not mean that Krah is a suspect and that he is under investigation, but serves to check whether any reasonable suspicion can exist at all.
