People could observe a tornado-like phenomenon northeast of České Budějovice on Monday afternoon. Thanks to the weather conditions, a so-called gustnado was created, which looks like a tornado. “Gustnado forms at the head of a storm and does not cause as much damage as a tornado itself,” explains Renata Uhlíková from the branch of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute in České Budějovice for iROZHLAS.cz and Radiožurnál.

What is gustnado?
It is a phenomenon that is similar to a tornado, but there are two differences between them. The main one is that a tornado originates in a storm cell and is clearly tied to it. But a gustnado forms at the front of a storm and does not cause as much damage as a tornado itself.

How much damage can gustnado do?
Their power usually reaches IF-0, at most IF-1. This means that they can carry heavier objects out of gardens, such as trampolines, but in theory they could also tear off a roof.
How common are gustnadas?
We are still investigating if it was a gustnado. In any case, they are not completely excluded, but they are not that common either. It also depends on the point of view. Nowadays, it can be said that they appear more, but we don’t notice them as much.
Are gustnada more common outside the Czech Republic?
In theory, they should appear more in convective storms (storm of very strong intensity – editor’s note)which occur closer to the equator.
