WTA MADRID – Sára Bejlek (18) continues the tournament of her life at the WTA 1000 event in Madrid and continues to collect her first victories in major competitions on the highest circuit. After successfully qualifying, she has already played three matches in the main stage, in the third round she swept the unseeded Ashlyn Krueger (19) 6:3, 6:1 and will play her biggest round of 16 in her career. Markéta Vondroušová (24) can also advance to the top sixteen.

Kruegerová – Bejlek 3:6, 1:6

In Madrid, Sára Bejlek showed her strength in the qualifying fights on the highest circuit and advanced to the main competition over Yanina Wickmayerová and Zhuoxuan Bai. This time, however, she did not say goodbye in the first round as in the past, after the Russian duel in the form of Anna Blinkova and the seeded Anna Kalinská, she used the unique opportunity to advance to the round of 16 and beat Ashlyn Krueger.

In a fight with an American woman a year older, who avenged last year’s unequivocal defeat in Austin, she had difficulties only in the beginning. She fended off all three break point threats in the marathon third game and was unstoppable after the first break of the match in the sixth game. In the following course, she lost only two games, while in the second set she did not allow her opponent to defend her serve even once.

The 18-year-old Bejlek is participating in her sixth major competition on the highest tour and her first at the WTA 1000 series events. In all five previous cases, at the US Open 2022, last year at the Australian Open and the French Open, and this year at the Australian Open and in Austin, she had a bye right away in the first round .

Making the top 16 in her first start at the Mutua Madrid Open saw her climb to 110th in the live rankings and secure a new high. If she makes it to the quarter-final stage, she should make her debut in the elite 100 in the new edition of the rankings.

However, in the round of 16, she will meet one of the biggest favorites for the title, namely former Wimbledon champion Jelena Rybakinová. The world number four did not allow a set to Lucia Bronzetti or Majar Sharif, arrived in Madrid after a triumph at a heavily occupied 500 in the Stuttgart hall and is still undefeated on clay this year.
