Menotti achieved the status of a legend in his homeland thanks to the national team’s triumph at the home World Cup. Fans liked the offensive style he dictated to his teams, as well as his restrained attitude towards the right-wing military junta ruling Argentina at the time.

A former professional footballer and international, he managed the Argentine national team from 1974 to 1983. He then coached Barcelona, which featured his national team player Diego Maradona, for one season, leading them to win the Spanish Cup, then the League Cup and the Super Cup. These three titles were his only ones in European football, other engagements at Atlético Madrid and Sampdoria Genoa ended without much success.

The man with the nickname “El Flaco” (Hubeňur) ended his coaching career in 2007 in the Mexican team Tecos. In 2019, at the age of 80, he was appointed to the position of general manager of the Argentine national team.
