Although topics such as dark matter and parallel universes are no newcomers to the silver screen, they continue to beckon viewers and filmmakers to explore them more closely. In the new adaptation of the well-known sci-fi novel Dark Matter, the bestseller of 2016, the creators are betting not only on a complex and changing story, but also on familiar faces and their performances.
Joel Edgerton, who we may know from the movie The King, the series Obi-Wan Kenobi or the Underground Railroad, will play the main role as Jason. His wife, the artist Daniele, was portrayed by the charismatic Jennifer Connelly (Top Gun: Maverick, Hideout). Their teenage son Charlie was played by Oakes Fegley (My Friend the Dragon).
The story follows a family father and physics professor who is kidnapped out of nowhere and thrown into an alternate version of his own life. In a labyrinth of different realities, he then tries to return to his original family and save them from other versions of himself. Both Egerton and Connelly thus play several variants of their characters with different stories and characters.
Dark matter relies on scientific concepts such as quantum theory and other complicated physical phenomena or theses. In the book, however, the author tries to explain these facts as briefly and comprehensibly as possible. They approached it similarly in the upcoming series. In addition to tidbits from science, the series promises tension, dark destinies, but also a strong romantic plot.
The author of the original Blake Crouch, who participated in the series Town of Pines (2015) or Good Manners (2016), is also the main screenwriter of the series. He turned the convoluted story of the book into a nine-hour series. How he succeeded or failed, we will soon be able to judge.
Nine episodes of the sci-fi thriller will be available on Apple TV+ starting May 8.
