On May 9, fifty years will pass since the beginning of operation of the Prague metro.

Not only historians but also the company that is closely associated with the construction of the metro – Metrostav – remember the zahjen. On the basis of memories, memorabilia and documents from the company’s archives, she compiled a list of forgotten stories from the history of construction and a selection of period photographs.

The original Vodn stavby company, Metrostav, and currently its subsidiary company Subterra, built grass tunnels on all routes of the Prague metro and a total of 49 stations, of which 33 were underground and 16 were elevated.

While at the present time the subway is fully automated and the tunnels are driven under the city and leave behind the finished tunnel tube and spikes, in the pioneering times they had to rely only on their own hands.

The non-mechanized punch tt was only a steel sheet with plates for the punch itself and for the installation and injection of concrete and cast iron segments. The work procedure was based on the cohesiveness of the rock supported on the slab, including welding the bag in hard runes with pneumatic hammers. The rocky environment required blasting tools, while the roads were lit by firewood. The first such train to be used in Prague was designated KM34 and was produced in the Soviet Union according to a Scottish design from 1920. At a record pace, it was able to travel 104 meters per month. Out of a total of 7,250 meters of single-track tunnels of the IC metro, Metrostav made half of them with the help of a non-mechanized ttu.

Perhaps no building in history has affected the center of Prague as dramatically as the construction of the subway in the city’s oldest streets.

The situation was particularly complicated by the fact that the underground railway was originally conceptualized as a tacitly established subsurface tram. This obviously limited the possibilities of deploying classic slaves.

All stations and hundreds of tunnels had to be excavated from open pits. As evidenced by photographs from Vclavskho nmst, the center of Prague was literally turned upside down during those times.

The project for the construction of grass tunnels in the Pankrc (then Mldenick) Budjovick cut was originally conceived with the idea that after the construction of the first tube, the tunnel would be dismantled and transported back to the starting pit. Enough folds and asov nron, eh? The builders of Metrostav (at that time, the original company Vodn stavby) were a visionary, so they figured out how to cultivate it as a whole.

At the end of the day, the construction manager made a miniature model of the ttt and with the help of the experiment he carried out various logistical maneuvers. It was nerve-wracking, because without the powerful computing technology we know today, no one could figure out all the details and connections. There was a rumor circulating among the construction sites that if this came true and a new road was built to Podol, the construction manager would get to Pankrc dv, not what he expected. In the end, it worked out in time. As a result, there was only one spectacle in cracked streets and the construction time was shortened by a whole month! Jet vt majstrtyk led a raid in Florenc station (then Sokolovsk), where they managed to turn it around in a roofed compartment and continue the operation in the opposite direction.

One of the most risky moments of the construction of the first section of the subway was the excavation under the church of St. Pancakes. The tunnel was born, as usual, not in a silent depth and in black loose sediments. The builders supported and secured the church and finally shared the dream. The famous Baroque monument was destroyed without a hitch, and during the previous archaeological survey, it was possible to discover the remains of the original rotunda from the 9th century. Even in comparison with other valuable finds, it is still the most important archaeological discovery from the construction of the subway.

Because the first excavations were carried out at shallow depths with altered geology, the so-called overbreaks often occurred, i.e. collapses from above, and in extreme cases even so-called collapses to the surface. Among the most curious items from the cellar, which were cleared out as a precaution, were advertising items of the First Republic’s Jakamarus liqueur, such as ashtrays and talkies. The drink was invented by a South Czech pharmacist, Alois K, who first opened a pharmacy in Pankrec to drive behind the First World Wolf Pharmacy, and also sold his own homemade herbal extract to patients with stomach problems.

Did anyone at that time remember the letter from June 2, 1898, in which Ladislav Rott, a shopkeeper, called on the city management to take advantage of the construction of the sewage system in progress and to immediately start building an underground railroad? Even more so, 70 years later, the residents appreciated the record-breaking pace and the appropriate construction technology. The whole project was an unusual contribution to an archaeological survey of an unprecedented scale and yielded many important finds. For example, at the Hell Street near Hlavný ndro, employees of Metrostav (respectively, at the time, the head of the state-owned enterprise Vodn stavby) discovered marble water pipes from the 19th century and several times came across the remains of the old city walls.

Technically, the most ambitious call and the most unique one came from connecting the Ndra Holeovice station with the second run of the Vltava. Experts from Metroprojekt and Metrostav finally designed and realized the world’s unique combination of floating Dutch tunnels with gradual slips, on behalf of colleagues from BUT and foreign institutions. They gradually concreted the tunnel in the dry dock, then flooded this dock and connected it to the stream. After that, the tunnel, enclosed on a pontoon, was gradually pushed out to its final position on the bottom. The waterproofing of the tunnels under the Vltava was ensured by the use of waterproof concrete without any waterproofing.

The first mechanized tt broke through to the Staromstsk station and continued to Mstek, where the machinists dismantled it. Druh ended his stay in Staromstsk for a number of reasons.
