A robotic dog with a flamethrower for the price of a used car? Just a year ago, something like this might have sounded like a scene from some post-apocalyptic series. However, the four-legged “pet” with a fire cannon is already available in the US for a surprisingly affordable price. You will pay less than 10,000 dollars for a robotic dog with a flamethrower, camera and Bluetooth, which the American company named “Thermonator”. What’s more, with the exception of two US states, it is not subject to any regulations.
It is sometimes said that humanity is contributing to its own destruction with each robotic invention. However, this did not deter engineers from the Ohio company Throwflame to put together a seemingly bizarre invention in their workshops. Thermonator outwardly resembles the well-known robotic dogs from Boston Dynamics, which scored points on social networks mainly with their viral dances. However, this “mascot” bet on completely different advantages.

According to the official website, the built-in ARC flamethrower can reach a distance of about 10 meters. The scaled-down version of the gas-tank fire cannon is not subject to any restrictions in most US states, as it falls under the category of “personal use flamethrowers”.
The Thermonator – like all similar robots – is controlled by a mobile phone or computer via Bluetooth or WiFi. In practice, the entire process of turning on, activating modules, determining and entering actions works similarly to the case of a flying drone. The roughly one-hour battery life is similar.
A camera is also mounted on the four-legged machine, through which it is not a problem to film the actions of the robotic dog in the field and monitor all its movements. Of course, no robot is complete without a little artificial intelligence. The Thermonator boasts several sophisticated sensors that allow it to avoid obstacles and choose the most suitable terrain for progress, unless instructed otherwise by a human operator.
A rather eloquent video published by the American station CNN, as well as a photo gallery from the manufacturers, show what the robot dog with a flamethrower can do. The authors see possible use, for example, in agriculture or in catastrophic situations, for example when a blizzard hits the US and traps households in the countryside. Last but not least, they also mention “working with special effects and entertainment”, which can be interpreted in any number of ways.
The big surprise for many is the price. The Thermonator is available for less than 10 thousand dollars (roughly 236 thousand crowns) and also with free shipping within the United States of America. Federal authorities do not consider small flamethrowers to be firearms or any other weapon, so buying a unique robotic dog is only a matter of money.
According to technology website Wired, there are only two exceptions. For example, they have special restrictions in Maryland, where a federal firearms license is required to own flamethrowers. Limits can also be encountered in California, where the range of flamethrowers cannot exceed 10 feet.
