Will you be rewriting cookbooks? Germany is resisting the minister’s attempt to change the composition of food

--

The institute submitted an interim report to the ministry last week, criticizing that efforts to reduce sugar, fat and salt in food have “slowed or stopped in part in recent years”. Özdemir therefore puts pressure on the food industry and “asks” for an “objective, scientifically based basis” because “we all have a responsibility”.

Food producers are fighting back and consider Minister Özdemir’s idea as “impermissible interference”. “You constantly assure that you don’t want to mentor and promote, but then you want to rewrite the recipes. It doesn’t go very well together,” commented the minister’s efforts, the head of the food industry, Christoph Minhoff. And immediately he asks: “What comes next?” Transcriptions of cookbooks?’

Another coalition partner – the Free Democratic Party (FDP) – is also skeptical of the Ministry of Agriculture’s plan.

“Companies make what sells, in other words, what people like. When it comes to ready-made products, people want tasty food on the table quickly, and politicians shouldn’t have a problem with that,” agricultural expert Gero Hocker told the Bild newspaper.

However, some doctors are not enthusiastic either. Johannes Scholl of the German Academy of Preventive Medicine considers Özdemir’s plans “scientifically outdated”. “Reducing fat doesn’t mean people will get slimmer. Saturated fats are not inherently unhealthy. Full-fat dairy products, such as plain yogurt and cheese, even protect against stroke.

And the real cause of the increase in obesity and diabetes is too many carbohydrates from bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and sugar combined with too little physical activity,” said Scholl. According to him, people should focus on fresh, unprocessed foods in their diet.

CDU agricultural expert Albert Stegemann also criticizes the plan. “After Cem Özdemir politically ran afoul of a total ban on food advertising, he is now testing state requirements for recipes. This is disruptive and disproportionate,” he said.
