The Japanese manufacturer of hygiene products began selling diapers for both adults and children over the weekend in shopping centers on the island of Kyushu, The Guardian reported with reference to the Japanese newspaper The Mainichi.

When recycling, the company uses special technology that must rid the diapers of bacteria and odors, among other things. “We have received approval from hygiene experts,” said Cutomu Kido, head of Unicharm.

How recycling works

The company describes on its website that first the used diapers are finely pulverized, washed, and then the materials are separated from each other, especially pulp and superabsorbent polymer (SAP).

According to the company, however, at this stage the materials are still dirty and smelly, so the pulp is treated with ozone to kill bacteria. The SAP is treated with an acid to restore its absorbency.

After these treatments, both pulp and SAP become clean and safe enough to be reused to make new disposable diapers.

The company began producing recycled adult diapers in 2022, initially providing them to hospitals and nursing facilities. The range, which is now available, also includes diapers for children. “Customers who used these products reported that they were comfortable and did not feel any difference from the regular ones,” the statement said.

A package containing 42 baby diapers costs ¥1,078 (CZK 165), according to The Mainichi, which is slightly more expensive than regular disposable diapers.

In Japan, demand for baby diapers is falling as fewer babies are born in the country. For example, the Japanese company Oji Holdings announced last month that it will end the production of baby diapers in the country this year. Instead, they will focus on adult diapers.
