Accidents in the downpour outside Olomouc, crashed cars choked the highway

After skidding on a wet road, two cars ended up in the barriers there on Monday. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accidents, but the accidents limited traffic on the D35 for several hours. The police calculated the total damage at three quarters of a million crowns.

The first wreck happened at eight o’clock in the evening on the D35 after the Mladeč exit in the direction of Mohelnice.

According to the police, the 48-year-old driver of the Opel drove too fast in the heavy rain and skidded.

“With the right side of the car, he hit the metal guardrails, from which he bounced into the left lane, and with his left side, he hit the center guardrails, where he stopped,” described police spokeswoman Ivana Skoupilová.

The accident at the site limited traffic for two hours. “There was material damage to the vehicle and guardrails in the total preliminary amount of 200,000 crowns. The presence of alcohol in the driver was ruled out by a breath test,” said the police spokeswoman.

The police were on their way to another accident on the D35 highway before 10 p.m. This time, a Škoda “slipped” in the downpour after the Unčovice exit in the direction of Olomouc.

After skidding, the 50-year-old driver drove off the highway lane to the right and crashed into the side barriers.

“At the same time, a 28-year-old driver with a truck was passing by, trying to avoid the crashed vehicle. However, he ran into its plastic fragments, which damaged the right rear wheel of the tractor. Breath tests on the drivers ruled out the presence of alcohol. The material damage caused was preliminarily calculated to 520 thousand crowns,” spokeswoman Skoupilová said.

After this accident, the highway was closed in the direction of Olomouc for almost three hours.
