After a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich that saw Real Madrid climb back from a 1-0 deficit in the last five minutes of the match, the Champions League Final is set. It will feature Real Madrid taking on Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid is no stranger to the Champions League Final, having won a title as recently as 2022. In fact, Real Madrid has the most titles of any club with 14 — including five since 2014. That’s double the next closest team (AC Milan ) with 7. Dortmund on the other hand, they’re very unfamiliar with this territory. Although they have been staples in the Champions League/European League for some time now, Dortmund has not appeared in a Champions League Final since 2013 and has not won a title since 1997.
To make matters even worse for Dortmund, Madrid has owned them as of late, racking up two straight wins and not losing against Dortmund in their last five matches. The last time Dortmund beat Real Madrid was during the 2013-14 Champions League. All in all, Madrid holds a 6-3-5 record against Dortmund.
On the bright side, this is a much different Real Madrid team than the one that beat Dortmund in 2018. Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer there to torment them. However, that doesn’t mean Real Madrid will be any easier to take down.

Tansey writes, “Real Madrid should win the match with its overwhelming attacking talent. Dortmund’s only path to victory is through a low-scoring battle in which it gets one or two moments to score, like it did in Tuesday’s semifinal win with a Hummels goal off a corner kick.”

Bonn writes, “Borussia Dortmund are extremely well-coached, but they concede far too many chances — they have the largest differential between xGA and goals conceded in the entire competition, conceding over 10 more xG than goals. PSG were not ruthless enough to capitalize on their glut of opportunities, but while Dortmund possess the most in-form goalkeeper in the competition in Gregor Kobel, they will not be so lucky against a more clinical opponent with the likes of Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham.”
