In the past few days, some Apple iPhone users have started complaining on social networks that it is did not wake up the set alarm. Although the bug was featured on NBC’s Today Show on April 30 as news, it’s at least the third time in the past year or so. Details are provided by the PhoneArena website.

iPhone owners have also complained about the same issue across Reddit and Apple’s community forums. Because of this, some fell asleep at work or school, while others stayed awake watching the alarm clock application on their phone screen, which, however, did not make any sound.

Apple acknowledged the problem

Apple subsequently stated in an official statement that it is “aware of an issue that causes some iPhone alarms to not play the expected sound” and added that working on the repair. The company did not describe in any detail what causes this error, or why it affects only some users, while the alarms work for most.

This kind of error is usually related to some time change. For example, a 2010 iOS alarm bug was caused by daylight saving time, and another occurred in the first two days of 2011 when alarms suddenly stopped working, only to start working again on January 3rd without any software update.

As in December and June last year, users affected by this bug are advised disable the feature Attention detection. This can be turned off in the system Settings in the section Face ID and code after entering the code by deactivating the appropriate switch.

Maybe set a normal alarm

The Attention Detection feature can cause alarms to go off silently by incorrectly detecting the user’s “attention”. Essentially, the iPhone can think the user is awake when they’re not, and then turn off or silence alarms.

The New York Post reported that another a possible cause of silencing alarms is the new “StandBy Mode” function available on some iPhones. This feature displays widgets in sleep mode and can reportedly disturb alarms. This function can also be deactivated in the system Settings.

Although the temporary solutions sound quite simple and easy, Apple will need to find the cause of the error causing the mentioned alarm clock problems. Until then, you might want to consider putting a good old alarm clock on your bedside table or using your Android phone for wake-up purposes. Just don’t go for the Google Pixel because you might run into similar problems.
