“Since my birthday was on May 17, my brother took me on a ride along the entire route about a week after the subway opened,” Cysař recalls five decades ago, saying that he probably brought him a similar enthusiasm to what he experienced then just fly the plane with your parents.
He recalls how the new means of transport caused him great astonishment at the perfection of technology.
“It was amazing, complete science fiction. At a time when there were doorless trams and steam trains in Prague, the metro came to me as if from outer space,” he told Novinkám a Práv about his childhood experiences with a smile.

The boys got off at each station, inspected it thoroughly, and rode back. The emperor remembers how much he was impressed by the Vyšehrad stop, which is above ground, glass, with a beautiful view. The escalators, another novelty that gave many people a hard time, so that initially the passengers had to be assisted by paramedics to be safe, were said to be handled with ease.
But he admits that he was very afraid of driving over the Nuselský bridge, which connects Prague 2 and 4. He has endured so far.
“I’ve been afraid of heights all my life. It’s a strange feeling when you’re riding a tube and you’re almost fifty meters deep,” he explained.
Even later, the route on line B, which went deeper under the Vltava, was not good for him either. “I was afraid to ride underwater, because at that time they said that if something happened, they would close the tunnel doors, and I was afraid that we would drown,” he points out.
He would like the subway to the airport
However, he still likes the metro. “Prague could not function without him and just like without the Blanka tunnel complex,” says the native Pražák, who today lives in Řevnice in Central Bohemia. He still uses the underground connection because he works in the metropolis.
As for the future, he is looking forward to line D, which will run between the city center and Písnica, or to the circular route E. This should connect all routes and offer a quick connection to more peripheral parts without having to go through the center. Prague presented the idea two years ago.
“But I won’t experience that again,” shrugs Cysař, who would like a metro to the airport and some above-ground section similar to the German S-Bahn.
From the history of the Prague metro
The first section of the Prague metro was opened on May 9, 1974 at 9:19 a.m., as a reminder of the 29th anniversary of the liberation of Prague by the Red Army. During the first ride, the guests were served a dessert in the shape of a metro, which was designed and produced by the state enterprise Pekárny Michle for this occasion. History
Apparently, the first proposal for the construction of an underground railway in Prague was the initiative of the Prague businessman Ladislav Rotto in 1898. Four underground lines were planned in 1926 by Vladimír List and Bohumil Belada. Work on the preparation of a new means of transport began more intensively in the 1960s, when traffic deteriorated rapidly. The winner was the underground tram, which was supposed to lead from the main station across the Nuselský most to Pankrác. Construction began in 1966, but before long, based on a survey by a Soviet commission, it was found that a subway system separated from the tram would be more efficient, so the sections under construction still had to be rebuilt. The opening was planned for 1970, delays caused by lack of experience prolonged the construction until 1974.
