Mold on the walls is not only unsightly, but also potentially dangerous. It is most often found above the ceilings, below the floor, along the edges of the paneling or behind the furniture. It is mainly faced by owners of houses and apartments with high humidity. That is why we can often find it in the bathroom, kitchen or laundry room.

Moisture, poor ventilation and high temperatures are a breeding ground for mold. Their invisible spores are transmitted through the air, they settle on surfaces made of organic materials, such as wood, plaster or paper. And they grow. They will destroy everything over time because they will use the material as nutrients. Mold spreads incredibly quickly because it is an asexual organism. This means that a single pore can reproduce trillions of mold spores within days.

Vinegar or bleach will help

If you decide to remove them yourself, don’t forget protective clothing. In the mildest cases, you may experience symptoms that resemble seasonal allergies. These include cough, rash and itchy eyes. You should therefore have clothing that covers the whole body, waterproof shoes, gloves and preferably goggles.

If you don’t want to use store-bought chemicals, you most often remove mold with vinegar or bleach. When bleach, dilute it with water in a spray bottle in a ratio of 1:3 and soak the moldy areas thoroughly with this liquid. Leave it on for a few minutes and then remove the mold with gentle circular movements with the sponge. Never dry brush them, you could spread their spores around. Unfortunately, bleach often only removes surface stains, it does not penetrate deep, and mold can reappear over time.

The use of vinegar seems to be more effective. And maybe even easier, because you just need to pour it on the affected area undiluted directly from the bottle. In both cases, let the wet areas dry thoroughly. It can take all day. If you still see mold stains after drying, repeat the whole process. When the mold is completely removed, paint the wall again. Simply brushing paint over existing mold will not destroy it.

Fungal prevention

Protect your homes from mold above all else frequent ventilation. Also check for any pipeline leaks. Do not leave wet towels on the floor, but spread them out so they have a chance to dry. If possible, shower with the door open so that steam cannot build up and condense. Don’t push the furniture up to the wall so it can breathe.

The ideal humidity in your home should be between 30-60%. The higher it is, the higher the risk of mold. Protect the walls with mold-resistant paint. Prevention is the only way to get rid of mold permanently.
