--

Russian air defenses over occupied Crimea shot down four long-range missiles (ATACMS) produced by the United States. According to Reuters, this was reported by the Ministry of Defense in Moscow on Saturday, but the information cannot be independently verified. The United States began delivering this type of missile to Ukraine, which has been defending itself against Russian aggression for more than two years, in recent weeks.

The Russian Ministry of Defense did not release more details about the shooting down of the missiles. His claims cannot be independently verified in the conditions of a war conflict.

On Tuesday, Russian officials said the Ukrainian military was attacking Crimea with ATACMS missiles in an attempt to disrupt air defenses on the peninsula, but that the military shot down six of them.

Last week, the United States confirmed that it had started delivering this type of missile with a range of up to 300 kilometers to Ukraine. The Ukrainian army fired them for the first time on April 17 at the Dzhankoy military airport in Crimea, located about 165 kilometers from the front line.

The US Department of Defense initially opposed their deployment in the conflict in Ukraine due to the fact that they would be missing from the US military.

The United States was also concerned that Ukraine would use them to launch attacks deep into the Russian interior, which could lead to an escalation of the war and a possible direct armed confrontation between the United States and Russia.

Russia seized the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and it is the base of its Black Sea fleet.

Telegram channel RBK Ukraine, citing the partisan group Ates, composed of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars, reports that the Russians, fearing attacks by ATACMS missiles, are trying to hide military equipment in occupied Mariupol.
