The popular Cupra Formentor is finally presented with the promised facelift. It has a new face with an innovative light signature, a subtly improved interior and modified technology.
The most successful Cupra is officially presented with a significant facelift. The first original model of the Spanish sports-style brand has been produced since 2020 and with the upcoming half of the life cycle comes with a new face. At the same time, it has decent technical improvements, and although the five-cylinder Formentor VZ5 is no longer in the model portfolio, the two most important innovations have been taken over by the new top sports version with the VZ trade name.
The new Cupra Formentor is characterized by a more modern “shark nose”, which is based on the brand’s latest design. A big novelty is the new light signature of the front matrix LED headlights, which we have already seen in the past on the Tavascan electric SUV and the Terramar concept. The brand’s designers bet on a wide radiator grille and the brand’s logo located just in front of the hood. Until now, Formentor drove it with a smaller front mask.
The stern of the Formentor has also undergone a general improvement. The triangular motif of the new light signature also appears on the rear lights, and a stylish novelty of the model is the illuminated rear logo. At the same time, Cupra also introduces a pair of new matte paint colors – bronze Century and gray Enceladus. He states that he wants to emphasize the character of the model even more with them.
In the more modern cabin, a redesigned digital instrument panel appears after the facelift along with a larger central infotainment touchscreen with a diagonal of 12.9 inches. A new Sennheiser audio system with twelve speakers also appears on the list of available equipment.
Although the improved interior brings only minimal changes at first glance, Cupra traditionally maintains an ideal compromise between modern elements and user-friendly and practical controls in its models. The official press release states that in the new Formentor we will find a newly designed center console and new materials for a higher quality feel. At the same time, Cupra draws attention to a “more sustainable approach”, as it manufactures seat upholstery from recycled microfibers or eco-friendly leather.
And how is the technology? The Cupra Formentor is still based on the concern’s MQB Evo modular platform, and the main technical improvements concern the range-topping turbocharged 2.0 TSI four-cylinder petrol engine from the EA888 engine family. The original 228 kW (310 hp) is now 245 kW (333 hp). The latest Cupra Formentor VZ corresponds to the more powerful special editions of the Volkswagen Golf R in peak performance.
The stunning five-cylinder Formentor VZ5 has disappeared from the range of the modernized model, but some of the technology has been passed on to its weaker successor. After the facelift, the most powerful four-cylinder Formentor has powerful Akebono brakes and a Torque Splitter rear distribution. Both of these technical elements have so far been specific for the ultimate sports five-cylinder engine.
The Cupra Formentor still retains four different powertrains: pure petrol TSI, mild-hybrid eTSI, diesel TDI and plug-in hybrid eHybrid. The new generation plug-in hybrid with a system output of 200 kW (272 hp) promises a purely electric range of over 100 kilometers and is compatible with fast DC charging with a maximum output of up to 50 kW.
In addition, the Spanish brand, with the launch of the modernized Formentor, announced that it achieved record sales results during the first quarter of this year. During the first three months of 2024, it delivered 56,600 cars to customers. Interest in the new brand among customers increases every year, even in the Czech Republic.
