The famous DeLorean DMC-12 and Ford GT are back. Don’t expect a V8 or V6

--

When Ford began selling a tribute to the iconic GT40 in the form of the GT model twenty years ago, its production was short-lived. At the time, no one even dreamed that a car of this type could be offered as an electric car. The DeLorean DMC-12, which only became famous in the Back to the Future trilogy a few years after the end of production, was in a similar situation.

Nevertheless, both have now appeared with an electric drive, but not from the workshops of their original manufacturers. Behind the reconstructions – or one rebuild and one plan – stands Lynx Motors. She named her creations Lynx GT1e and DMC-EV.

The first named piece is a converted Ford GT. Lynx claims to have sourced various components from Matech Concepts, which prepared the GT for racing in the FIA GT1 class, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It should be about “a few remaining 2005 Ford GT chassis” and “original molds for body panels”.

These parts were used to create the first GT1e prototype, which Lynx says has a “rejuvenated exterior design”. There are few details, but the car is to have LED lighting and its appearance and coloring were created in collaboration with Camil Pardo, the former chief designer of the GT model.

Lynx GT1e

Not much information is known about the car, but from the images we see a large rear wing, a proper front spoiler, Plexiglas instead of side windows and air vents above the front wheels to reduce overpressure in the undercarriage, among other things.

The powertrain consists of four electric motors for all-wheel drive with a combined output of 1,790 kW (2,433 hp). This should allow the car to accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 1.5 seconds and manage a top speed of 515 km/h.

DeLorean sends the Alpha2 concept into production. There is a lot of interest in sports coupes

The automaker claims that one of the car’s goals is to set a new speed record for production cars. The energy storage is to take the form of a 100kWh battery from the California company Amprius. The car can travel up to 400 km on a single charge. There is no news yet about the weight of the car.

The second machine, called DMC-EV and presented so far in the form of only three illustrations, is a total modernization of the legendary DeLorean DMC-12. The design has changed a lot more compared to the original, and according to Lynx, the car should have LED lighting, a luxurious interior with a display and touch controls.

The car’s active and passive safety is also to be improved compared to the original, which is understandable when the original was created at the turn of the 70s and 80s of the last century. However, in this case, it is not known how the car will be created, whether it will be conversions of existing Deloreans, or whether it will be newly produced cars. Less than 9,000 original DMC-12s were produced and many of them are still running, so it is possible that Lynx will offer conversion to electric drive as a restomod.

The DMC-EV will also offer four electric motors, but certainly with significantly lower power. It should accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in less than four seconds. The range should also be 400 km, but on a 70kWh battery from the Chinese manufacturer CATL.

The company plans to build 100 units of the electric DeLorean and 27 units of the GT1e model. However, the prices and availability of the cars are not yet available.
