The state wants to prepare a new location for strategic investments | iRADIO

--

The Ministry of Industry and Trade signed a memorandum with Cheb and the Karlovy Vary region. Together, they want to prepare a new location for investments with higher added value in the Czech Republic. For example, it is about attracting companies focusing on electromobility, chips or artificial intelligence. The territory will be prepared by the state through its newly established development company.

In Cheb, the state plans to invest in the preparation of another part of the industrial zone with a size of 140 hectares | Photo: Slavomír Kubeš | Source: ČTK

This is the second of the projects in which the newly founded state developer State Investment and Development Company (SIRS) will participate. And the first project that this company will handle from the very beginning, SIRS director of development David Petr explained for the server iROZHLAS.cz and Radiožurnál.

The state wants a 200 billion gigafactory in Karvina. The place is not suitable for industry, echoes from the mayors

“It is about the development of the industrial site Cheb 2, where already in the principles of spatial development and the city’s spatial plan an area for an industrial park with an area of approximately 140 hectares has been defined. The subject of the memorandum is for us to pull together in the preparation of the site and get a strategic investor there,” Petr described the state’s intention.

They chose the location in Cheb due to its good transport infrastructure and location near the border. The fact that most of the plots for the intended construction of the park have the same owner also plays into the cards for the state developer. The Industry and Trade Resort expects to use 110 hectares of the total landscaped area purely for industry.

Smart mobility

The branch that the Karlovy Vary governorship wants to develop in the region is the so-called autonomous mobility. In Sokolov, BMW has already opened its test center in this sector. According to the expectations of the department and the region, the new industrial park should help with the further development of autonomous mobility in the region.

“In cooperation with the government, with German partners and the T-Mobile company, we strive for our entire region to gradually become a European center for the development of autonomous mobility. This infrastructure should significantly help the development of the strategic business park near Cheb and other industrial zones in the region,” said Karlovy Vary Member of Parliament Jan Kuchař (STAN).

According to David Petr, a similar type of investment is especially crucial for former coal regions. “A strategic investor could help the city and the Karlovy Vary region with the transformation and bring the desired effect of pressure to improve the labor market in the area,” he described the plan.

After all, this is also confirmed by the Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela (STAN), who points out that the Czech Republic must not let such key investments slip away.

“The transformation of the world economy presents a great challenge in the form of the development of new industries with high added value, such as those offered by chips, electromobility, artificial intelligence and others. The basis for us to survive in it is the production of modern technologies, which requires sufficiently large areas prepared as best as possible for their development,” explained Síkela.

Other than in Karvinska

However, according to Peter, the situation in Chebsk is different from, for example, in Dolní Lutyn in Karvinsk, where there is already an investor who has a specific investment plan for the area – the construction of a factory for batteries for electric cars, the so-called gigafactory, as we previously reported. In Cheb, an investor will only be sought in the next stages of site preparation.

Member of the management of the state developer: If we do not offer at least as much as others, investors will go elsewhere

“Currently, we do not have a specific investor. The signed memorandum contains elements that, on the basis of data and surveys – including the capacity of civic amenities, technical infrastructure and economic strategy of the state and region – the typology of the industry that we would like investors to locate there is to be determined. And CzechInvest should proactively reach out to them and offer the area, for example, at fairs,” he specified the state’s strategy director of SIRS development.

He refuses to move the investor from Dolní Lutyn to the newly planned location in Cheb. According to him, the location does not meet the requirements that a foreign company has for the size and location of an industrial zone.

In the coming months, SIRS wants to draw up a feasibility study to assess the maximum possible infrastructure capacity in the area, taking into account the requirements of individual investors. How long the preparation of the area will take and when the first investor could appear has not yet been announced by the state-owned company.
