American rapper Kendrick Lamar is in an open war with his Canadian colleague Drake. In recent days, both performers have released diss tracks – i.e. songs that aim to verbally attack someone else – in which they attack each other. But in addition to the classic drag and verbal abuse, Lamar speaks out about Drake’s alleged sexual abuse of minors in the latest record “Not Like Us”. The BBC reports on the rift.
“Say Drake, I heard you like ’em young,” Lamar raps, adding that women around Drake should watch out for younger sisters. Drake didn’t take long to answer. In the diss track The Heart Part 6 – which incidentally is a reference to previous Lamar songs of the same name, except for the number – he says that he is “disgusted” by Lamar’s behavior.
At the same time, it suggests that Lamar was fooled. “We spent a week making plans and then we fed you the information,” Drake raps, adding that Lamar is “betting on speculation.” He then advises his enemy to learn how to verify information.
The months-long “beef” – that is, the dispute between the rappers – began last year with Drake’s song First Person Shooter, in which rapper J Cole boasted that he, Drake and Lamar are the “big three” of hip-hop. But Lamar responded with a verse on Like That, in which he rises above the others and declares that there is no Big Three – “it’s just me”.
After the song reached number one in America, Drake responded with two disco tracks, Push Ups and Taylor Made Freestyle, the latter of which featured faux versions of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg mocking Lamar. The song was later pulled after Tupac’s estate threatened to sue.
