That they won’t attack the Czech Republic? Putin cannot be trusted, the government warns

--

“Vladimir Putin has repeatedly shown that he cannot be trusted,” Prime Minister Fiala emphasized to Novinky.

Defense Minister Jana Černochová (ODS) speaks similarly, for example. “I would like to take Vladimir Putin’s words seriously, but his actions look different. He is a convicted liar several times, as he himself proved to the world. Two years ago he was saying he wasn’t going to attack Ukraine, and in a few days the Russian invasion started, so I could go on. So when Putin leaves Ukraine and stops his aggression, I might believe him,” she told the editors.

Other ministers and party leaders also warn that the Russian president cannot be trusted. “A man who calls an offensive war a special military operation cannot be trusted. So I am not dealing with Putin’s statements, but his actions. And they lead me to be extremely wary of Putin and Russia,” pointed out Minister of the Interior and head of STAN Vít Rakušan.

Invade the Czech Republic or Poland? Total nonsense, Putin said

Europe

“I don’t trust the war criminal Putin at all. He chooses these words deliberately. He would be satisfied with our underestimation of his power ambitions,” added the head of the House of Representatives and TOP 09, Markéta Pekarová Adamová.

Putin’s false words before the invasion of Ukraine were also recalled by the president of the Pirates, Ivan Bartoš. “We are talking about a dictator who arbitrarily attacked a sovereign state, rules through propaganda and repression, systematically suppresses the opposition and murders his opponents, and used millions of fake and falsified votes to win the presidential election,” he emphasized.

Representatives of the opposition also doubt the words of the Russian president. “It’s not the words, but the actions that are important,” spokeswoman Barbora Šťastná told Novinka for the SPD. The head of ANO, Andrej Babiš, has not yet responded to the editor’s question.

President Petr Pavel and Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka refused to comment on the statement of the Russian head of state.

“NATO guarantees our security”

At the same time, Prime Minister Fiala emphasized that the Czech Republic is a member of NATO, which “guarantees our security”. “The security situation in Europe has changed significantly with the Russian aggression in Ukraine, and because of this we have to invest more in the security of the Czech Republic. We are succeeding in modernizing the army, we are finally releasing percentages of GDP. We are thus an increasingly valid member of NATO and thus increase the security of Czech citizens even in a deteriorated security situation,” Fiala tried to calm the situation.

We are weaker, war with NATO makes no sense, Putin admitted

Pekarová Adamová also sent a similar message to the Czechs. “We will not allow it. We are part of the world’s largest and most powerful defense alliance, and no one has done more for our country’s security in recent years than our government. We will continue to do so,” she said.

Bartoš reminded that “the Czech Republic firmly stands behind Ukraine and our security stands and falls with it”. “Concessions to the aggressor did not work in Munich in 1938, they did not work ten years ago in Minsk, and they would not work now. Give the aggressor a finger and he will take the whole hand. History textbooks are full of it. The biggest interest of the Czech Republic is the victory of Ukraine. Ukraine wants to defend itself. And we, as the West, have the power to supply Ukraine with everything it needs for its struggle,” he added.

According to Reuters, Putin said at a meeting with pilots in the Tver region that he does not care about NATO and will not attack Poland, the Baltic states or the Czech Republic. “We have no aggressive intentions towards these states,” he declared.

“The idea that we’re going to invade some other country—Poland, the Baltic states; and it also haunts the Czech Republic – it’s complete nonsense. It’s just nonsense,” Reuters quoted the Russian president as saying. Similar threats, i.e. that Russia is going to attack Europe after Ukraine, are, according to Putin, “absolute nonsense” and are only intended to intimidate the people of Europe.

But similar words were also heard in 2022. Just before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia ruled out that the country would be attacked, even though it was stockpiling troops and equipment in front of the borders. It told the world it was just an exercise.
